Mel Scott once had a Sliding Doors life moment in which she chose law over a career in theatre. The decision took the Australian to Bond University and then a bustling in-house career. She now works as senior legal counsel at Brisbane’s Megaport Limited and provides pragmatic legal solutions to the tech and cloud computing company that operates in twenty-five countries worldwide.
Scott says she’s most proud of how she’s ventured outside of her comfort zone to follow her curiosity and intuition rather than the trodden paths set by others. She made the transition from private practice to in-house roles early in her career and found herself in the deep end.
“I worked hard to build a network of senior mentors around me,” Scott says. “I soaked up as much of their knowledge as possible and got busy working through the steep learning curve.”
The continuous learner is passionate about educating the next generation of lawyers and law students about in-house practice and what a rewarding career path it can be. Looking back, Scott is confident she made the right choice in becoming a lawyer.
Although she’s not making a living on stage, she’s found several outlets for her creative pursuits. In April 2020, Scott started the Counsel podcast to connect more with her profession, share her own knowledge, and build her profile in the community.
