Ilham El Guessabi earned a Master of Law from Middlesex University Dubai and Cardiff University, but her education and love for learning about law didn’t end with her degrees. After graduation, she moved around to different companies to gain experience before settling at Marsh McLennan for four years, where she was most recently the regional legal and compliance officer.
What is one of the biggest misconceptions about being an attorney or the legal function itself?
One prevalent misconception about being an attorney or engaging in the legal profession is the assumption that lawyers possess an exhaustive knowledge of all existing laws. In reality, the legal landscape is complex and diverse, with various legal systems, jurisdictions, and distinct laws across different countries. Contrary to the belief that lawyers have immediate access to an encyclopedic understanding of all laws, the role often involves extensive legal research. It is not merely about memorizing statutes but requires the ability to interpret and understand the legislative language.
Laws are readily available online, but the true mark of a lawyer is the ability to discern, interpret, and articulate responses adeptly. This involves recognizing legislative objectives, understanding the varied approaches lawmakers may take, and ultimately being a strategic thinker capable of navigating the legal complexities.
What’s a piece of unconventional advice you’ve received that was helpful?
“Having no dreams is like following an invisible shadow or chasing a traceless murder.” This advice emphasizes the importance of having aspirations and goals in life. Without dreams, life can become directionless and elusive, much like pursuing something intangible or fleeting. In other words, dreams provide purpose and substance to our journey, guiding us with a tangible presence rather than navigating through the obscurity of an invisible path.
What song or album motivates you the most?
The song that motivates me the most is a heartfelt tribute to mothers. The lyrics beautifully express the deep bond between a child and their mom, capturing the essence of maternal love and sacrifice. Whenever I feel challenged or disheartened, listening to this song serves as a poignant reminder of the unconditional support and strength that mothers provide. The lyrics paint a picture of a nurturing figure who shares in both joys and struggles, offering comfort and inspiration. This song holds a special place in my heart because it resonates with my own profound connection to my mom.
