Grant Reid leads the corporate legal function at Atlassian, a large San Francisco-based enterprise software company that he joined full-time in 2020. His team is responsible for all corporate legal matters, including reporting, financing, corporate governance, and venture capital issues. Atlassian boasts a team of 7,000 individuals who together support a worldwide customer base of over 250,000. Their most well-known tools and products are Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Trello.
The Duke graduate lists working with great teams and helping law students and junior lawyers achieve their own career dreams as his greatest career accomplishment. And when it comes to his own ambitions, Reid sees himself eventually leading a purpose-driven legal team in a cutting-edge company.
Reid interned for Justice Don R. Willett of the Supreme Court of Texas and started his career as an associate at Wilson Sonsini. He has also worked in-house at Cabify and Box. Although he enjoyed his time in private practice, Reid relishes the challenge of working and building trust with business teams to best serve them from an in-house role. “Building credibility and trust with business teams takes time and hard work,” he says. “Learning to understand your business partners’ needs and how to best serve them is a fun challenge and makes in-house life super rewarding.”
For Reid, being a lawyer is all about solving challenging problems with smart people, which he says makes for a truly rewarding career.
