Chris Ashiotes has been busy during his five years with Pilot. He joined Pilot Freight Services as general counsel shortly after its transition from being a family owned company to private equity in 2017. Since then, he’s been part of seventeen franchise acquisitions, three transformative third-party acquisitions, California class actions, government investigations, and a global pandemic.
In May 2022, Pilot Freight Services completed a $1.7 billion sale to Maersk. Despite these accomplishments, Ashiotes is most proud of the culture of compliance he was able to create within a historically family owned and franchise model company. He developed several compliance programs from scratch and ran best-in-class programs for the transportation and logistics company in last mile home delivery and export controls.
After all he’s been through, Ashiotes is passionate about helping young professionals who aspire to pursue in-house or alternative legal careers. “I want to provide these students the opportunity to explore a broad range of opportunities in things like compliance, regulatory affairs, or data privacy,” he says, adding these pursuits may even help lawyers discover new ways to use their education and training.
Since 2018, Ashiotes has operated a successful internship program for students from the Greater Philadelphia area. He also participates in the Association of Corporate Counsel Greater Philadelphia Diversity Corporate Summer Internship program, which places student interns who are among traditionally underrepresented minority groups within corporate legal departments.
