As a member of Athene Life Re: LTD’s legal team, Janine Carey is tasked with assisting general legal, regulator, and compliance matters at the Bermuda-based reinsurance company. Since coming in-house, Carey is proud that she has had the opportunity to demonstrate leadership and gain the trust and confidence of her peers.
Carey was able to overcome the uncertainty and wide variety of in-house legal work by purposefully deflecting her apprehension and remembering to trust in her own potential. “In-house counsel offers exposure to different facets of a company that may require new or creative legal analysis to meet business needs,” explains the vice president of legal, regulatory, and governance.
The VP is also extremely passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and she believes in ensuring young professionals from all backgrounds have the opportunity to connect with a career that is right for them.
“Practicing law has a great way of exposing you to different experiences, skill sets and people,” she says. “There are so many diverse and niche practice areas that one can be involved in which keeps the occupation vibrant and interesting.”
Carey recently became as a judge and mentor for the Bermuda Debate Society, which facilities tournaments for local students and has been a rewarding experience for her. She also helped an Athene Bermuda pro bono initiative which provides members of the legal team with a platform to participate in various pro bono opportunities and community outreach.
