Wali Ahmad isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. The University of Ottawa graduate is the first in his family to become a lawyer. He joined Mistplay as the technology, advertising, and mobile gaming company’s only legal counsel in his first year as an attorney. In a just a few short years, he’s managed to build a legal department for a start-up company from scratch while providing the necessary support needed during a due diligence period that led to the company’s first successful investment deal.
He certainly faced challenges along the way. As a team of one, he had to overcome knowledge gaps by conducting research and networking with professionals to figure out the industry legal standards and discover how to build a legal department within a rapidly growing company.
“I’ve learned what works for this company by experimenting with different strategies,” he notes, “and I have managed this knowledge to optimize all of our legal processes.”
Ahmad, who was born in Canada to parents who emigrated from Pakistan, is passionate about racial equality, freedom of religion, and the right to privacy. He leverages his expertise to bring international awareness of freed of religion-related issues across the globe by writing and publishing articles.
“Growing up in a Muslim household and in a province where religion is highly politicized,” he explains, “it is important for me to demonstrate the impact of restrictions on freedom of religion on the lives of religious individuals, especially within a professional or employment context.”
