As legal business partner, Joel Roy supports nearly all aspects of the Novartis Oncology business unit on a variety of topics such as contractual negotiations and review, oversight and governance committees, digital and innovation initiatives, and intellectual property.
During his tenure at the global top-three pharmaceutical company, Roy has been instrumental in driving key legal ops initiatives to the finish line as he’s worked to standardize Quebec clinical trial agreements across the industry and its main research institution partners, which contributed to a 75 percent reduction in cycle time.
The former litigator has reinvented himself as a trusted business partner and demonstrated his ability to pivot and flourish in the corporate role. “I mostly adapted by learning from others who were more experienced, and also by shedding the ‘lawyer’ persona I believe I needed to have on at all times as a relic of my time in private practice,” he says.
In private practice, Roy was a member of Justice Pro Bono, which preselects cases and sends them to practicing lawyers for consideration. Now, he enjoys mentoring and coaching young law students, especially those coming from abroad trying to find a place in Canada.
The self-described “misfit” lawyer in a firm setting remembers the anxiety associated with starting out and says he “tries to show and introduce students to the many different ways in which one can practice law while staying true to her own voice.”
