Giorgia Vulcano serves as global digital ethics manager for the biggest brewery in the world at Anheuser-Busch InBev. Vulcano is tasked with examining the legal and ethical implications of existing and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, applying legal design to remove silos within the business, and ensuring compliance is not an afterthought when launching new products and services.
Prior to her current role, Vulcano acted as a human rights lawyer, including spending several years in Costa Rica and Chile where she addressed human rights violations committed by military dictatorships. “I learned about a valuable concept that would change my path as a lawyer: the concept of empathy,” she says. “I did so from a social perspective, as there is really nothing less empathetic than a dictatorship regime.”
Vulcano continues to volunteer on behalf of victims of dictatorships in Latin America (Asociacion de Familiares de Ejecutados Politicos), for the enforcement of the right to water in Chile (Modatima), and for a Brussels-based social antimafia organization (BASTA!).
She is most passionate about building economic and social value in a way that is fairer and more inclusive for all, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, she became a board member of WomenATPrivacy, where she helped create a platform for female privacy professionals from scratch.
“I did this with the vision of not only building a community where women can enhance their expertise and professional development,” she explains, “but also where they can discuss, inspire and exchange with others in a safe and stimulating environment.”
